Sailing routes in Turkey

The Turkish Riviera is the easiest place for a first week under sail: bases in Marmaris, Fethiye, Göcek and Bodrum, daily legs of 10–25 miles, and dozens of sheltered coves in the Hisarönü and Fethiye gulfs where you spend the night at anchor or on a restaurant pontoon. Summer wind is an afternoon westerly sea breeze of 12–20 knots; storm closures are rare. The season is long, April to November; October is still warm and noticeably cheaper than summer. A transit log and a refundable deposit are added to the boat price at the base.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in Turkey?

July and August are the peak, with the highest prices; May, June, September and October bring warm water, a steady afternoon breeze and prices below the peak. Do I need a licence to charter a yacht?

For a bareboat charter (no skipper or crew provided), yes: a skipper's licence and, as a rule, a VHF radio certificate. Without a licence, we add a skipper, paid separately from the boat price.

What is the security deposit and how is it paid?

The security deposit is your insurance excess in case of damage, usually €1,000–8,000. It is taken at the base at check-in on a credit card issued outside Russia: charter companies don't accept Russian cards or debit cards. With a hired skipper the deposit terms may be different, and not every charter company accepts a cash deposit or deposit insurance: check with the manager.
